I was talking with a potential client the other day and we were discussing her current business and where things were at and where she wanted to go.  The one thing that became very clear in speaking with her is that she could describe fairly clearly where she was at even where she saw things currently going but she became stuck and even tongue tied when speaking about where she wanted to go.  As an entrepreneur this is so common, we get so involved in our business that we barely lift our heads for air as we keep our nose to the grindstone.  The problem is that this kind of action is very short-focused.  You are constantly putting out fires but never really getting ahead.

Why does this happen?  Why do we let our dreams go to the side? Why do we stop thinking of possibility and opportunity?  From what I have seen it is because we get into survival mode.  We are so concerned with the day to day activities and making sure it all gets done that we forget why we got into this in the first place.  If this sounds like you, you can make a change.  It really is as simple as deciding you are going to do things differently from now on.  So here is a quick exercise I recommend you do to begin working in the direction you want to be going.

Allow yourself 15-30 minutes to do this Success Assignment.  Get a nice notebook and pen (the mind/heart connection works best when you are actually hand writing things out) and answer the following questions:

  • Why did I start this business in the first place?
  • What do I love about what I am doing right now?
  • What would I like to do less of or get rid of completely?
  • What main goal am I working towards right now?
  • What overall goal am I working on for the rest of this year?

Give yourself time to really think these question out and write from the heart not just the mind.  Don’t only focus on what you think is possible from where you currently sit, think of opportunity, luck and possibility.  We do not allow ourselves to dream often enough.  Walt Disney, one of my great heroes was such a dreamer that he named the engineers who worked with him imagineers.  Isn’t that a great name ?!!   Imagination + Engineers.  How often are you allowing your imagination to play a major part in what you plan for your business and your life for that matter?

Getting clear about what you want is THE most important step in anything you choose to do.  If you have not taken the time to get clear on what success looks like for you and you are not achieving what you had hoped to in your business .  My question is: How could you achieve success when you are not even sure what IT really looks like.  So stop whatever it is you are doing right now and take this very important action step.  Respond to the questions above and allow yourself to get fully clear on what you want to happen and what you are working towards at this moment.

If you find that this exercise is difficult, I would love to help you.  I am offering a special Fabulously Successful Clarity Session to help you get CLEAR on where you want to go in your business and life.  Together, we will create an action plan to move your ideas forward.  Click here to get the details.  In the meantime, if you truly know what you are working towards, share it in a comment below, so I can cheer you on!
