If you are like most people, you live in a bubble of comfort and go through life from one day to the next with more or less only the occasional hiccup or blip on your comfort scale . Let me ask you though, is that comfortable state helping you to grow, helping you to spread your wings and helping you to test your limits? If you are honest with yourself, the answer is most probably “no”.
I am sure you have heard the phrase ‘Magic happens outside of your comfort zone’. For myself and for every client I have worked with, this has definitely been the case. What would happen then if you decided to start taking a step out of your comfort zone every day for the next 30 days? They could be baby steps towards a particular outcome you seek. Maybe something as simple as giving your full attention to every person you speak with instead of doing three other things at the same time, if you are wanting to enhance the quality of your relationships or switching up your morning eating habits by testing a new smoothie recipe, if you are wanting to eat healthier. Or you could try something a bit more significant like waking up 30 minutes earlier every day so you can fit in a new exercise routine or do daily writing on that book you have been meaning to finish. The important thing is to do something to get out of that normal routine of yours and shake things up a bit – to take action.
Tim Ferris sings the praises of getting out of your comfort zone in his bestselling book “The 4 Hour Work Week”. In fact he encourages his readers to do things that make them feel downright awkward like asking attractive strangers for phone numbers and saying no to every request you get for an entire day. His point is that getting used to being uncomfortable helps you to start taking those bold, seemingly disagreeable, steps that help you get to where you really want to be.
So to help you start testing those limits, I would like to invite you to step closer to where the magic happens by taking a 30 day challenge to test your limits. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is simple: get out of your normal routine and push past your everyday rituals to create space for the new and different. What is it that you really want to make happen in the next 30 days? Decide on something right now and then write it down (I’ll be writing a future blog post about the importance of writing it down but for now just trust me, writing it down helps). Ok, now that you have your written 30 day goal, start thinking about how you could make that happen. Do you need to reach out to someone that you haven’t dared call? Would it help to begin a new way of doing things that you have been resisting? Have you been wanting to ask a friend or loved one to do something and have been avoiding it? It could be as simple as taking one uncomfortable step and you will have accomplished what you have been putting off for months or perhaps even years or it could take the full 30 days of consistent uncomfortable action. The fact is, if you do not make a move you will remain exactly where you are.
We were meant to grow and stretch and improve. Simply look to nature for confirmation of the phrase ‘You are either growing or dying‘. It is my guess if you are still reading this, you are someone who definitely wants to go for the growing option. So take the Push Your Limits Challenge and push yourself for the next 30 days to do those things that will get you closer to your goal. Get comfortable being uncomfortable and watch the great things that begin showing up for you!
